A deacon is not defined by what he does but is defined by who he is. I Am Deacon Raymond A. Perham, a Permanent Deacon in the Diocese of Charleston assigned to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. We have been at our Lady of the Rosary since 1980. My ordination was 19 May 2007. I am married to my wife Nancy Underwood Perham from Athens,  Texas; we have been married 55 years. During that time we have been blessed with three adult children and five grandchildren.

My journey from Portland Maine to here has been blessed but rather unusual. I spent eight years in the US Marine Corps and 14 years in the US Air Force. While in the Marine Corps I served a tour of duty in Chu Lai, Vietnam. In those 22 years we have lived in 25 different places. After my military career I was employed by Michelin Tire Company and spent 24 years with Michelin and Michelin R & D.

In addition to numerous course completion certificates, I have two associate degrees, one in teaching and another one in measurements from the Community College of the Air Force. Additionally, I have a BS degree in Vocational Education from the University of West Florida.

It is my good fortune to assist with two prison ministries. At the Greenville County Detention Center there is a team of religious volunteers from different Catholic churches who teach Bible study. At Perry State Prison the team is responsible for or coordinates the sacraments such as Confession, Mass, and also Catechism study. In both places we supply the inmates with English and Spanish language Bibles, prayer books, catechisms, and also Rosary beads and other training materials.

In all things we must remember it is about bringing souls to Christ. We start from where we are on this journey and continue until we see the face of Jesus in Heaven.
