Mikael McKinney, Director of Youth Ministry at OLR, grew up Southern Baptist with very anti-Catholic views. But because of God’s wonderful sense of humor, and patience, Mikael married into a strong Catholic family. After asking many questions and going through RCIA at St Mary’s, Greenville, SC, Mikael was received into full communion with the Catholic church at the Easter Vigil Mass in 2008. Having been involved in youth ministry in the Protestant church, he volunteered to serve in youth ministry at St Mary’s and served there for three years.
Mikael works full time at Gordon Food Service. He, and his wife Jessica have been very happily married since 1998, and have two children, Katie and Sean. Jessica works with UFRC, a non-profit organization in Boiling Springs.
In August of 2011, Mikael and his family joined OLR parish and assumed the role of Youth Director.
The High School youth group at OLR meets every Sunday from 6:00 – 8:00pm. They enjoy games, activities and a meal together each week. In addition, there is a time of teaching each week, an annual retreat, sharing in Diocesan youth events, and the National March for Life. The youth group serves in various ways in the parish, and their mission is to “Glorify Christ in all our thoughts, words, and actions.”
