In 2020 the SVdP Society OLR Conference provided the following assistance to the needy in the area:
We served 1500 clients in the food pantry. The pantry is open every Saturday except holidays. We received from Harvest Hope 35,000 lbs. of food at a cost of $1,500. The pantry was closed for only two months due to COVID-19. SVdP members contributed 600 service hours to this ministry. Special thanks to Ed and Colette Roberts and Bernie Degres for running the pantry. Food is also delivered to a few clients who have no way to get to the pantry. We also prepare emergency food bags for the homeless and other needy that come by the church or church office for assistance.
SVdP delivered 18 food baskets that we received from the Knights of Columbus for Christmas to needy members of our community.
We prepared special Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets that included turkeys and hams for our food pantry clients at a cost of $1,000.
Thanksgiving morning some of our members assisted Pastor Alfred Johnson deliver Thanksgiving meals to the residents of Shemwood Crossing and to seven motels in the vicinity of OLR Church.
In 2020 the financial assistance ministry was open for five months due to COVID-19. A total of 40 clients were assisted with their utility bills at a cost of $5,000. The volunteers from SVdP contributed 94 service hours to this ministry. Special thanks to Bernie Degres and Marianne Stoddard for chairing this ministry.
SVdP assisted the Mother Teresa House Ministry by providing financial assistance for dentures for some younger people that qualify, so they can present a better appearance at job interviews. The total expenditure was $1,850.
Working with St. Mary Magdalene SVdP, we contributed funds towards extensive dental work for a needy young woman in the area.
Twenty homebound ministers donated 182 volunteer hours (910 volunteer driving miles), visiting the homebound or people in nursing homes and bringing them Holy Communion if requested. They also drove some to Mass. Thanks to Victoria Norris for chairing this ministry.
SVdP donated food and members volunteered at the Christmas in the Park celebration for the needy in Greenville on December 13th, 2020.
SVdP worked with Greenville County picking up trash along James Drive and around the church property each month. Bernie Degres is the captain of this ministry.
We started a new ministry toward the end of 2020 doing handyman-type work for needy clients that own their own homes. For example, a handicap ramp was built for a client of the food pantry. Thanks to Bernie Degres, Ed Roberts, Dan Menegay, and Leo Verranault for their assistance.
SVdP also contributed to the choral scholarship program at OLR school and purchased an orthopedic bicycle for a young member of our parish.
We also donated 25 hygiene bags to the catholic chaplain at Perry Correctional Institution. These were distributed to the catholic prisoners for Christmas. We also prepare hygiene bags for MTH. These and emergency food bags are distributed to the homeless in the area on a regular basis.
The SVdP Society– OLR Conference would like to thank the parishioners of Our Lady of the Rosary Church for their generous support of our ministries in 2020.
