We are happy to support parents in their role as the primary spiritual and moral educators of their children. We seek to give the children in our care the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to become faithful and fruitful disciples of Jesus with the support of their parents or guardians.
We ask that you please take a moment to read the following information thoroughly, as some significant changes have been made to the Religious Education Program at OLR.
CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Do you have a 3-6 year old? We invite you to register for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori-based form of catechesis grounded in the Church’s liturgy and doctrine. Scripture passages and themes presented throughout the year range from the Good Shepherd and Eucharistic Presence to Jesus’ infancy and the liturgical year. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd meets once each school week. Calendar dates and times will be available soon. For more information, email Claire Cousino at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Classes for sacramental preparation are 2-year programs. Students in 1st or 7th grade in public schools will need to attend religious education classes this year, as well as next year, in order to receive First Holy Communion in 2nd grade or Confirmation at the beginning of 9th grade.
CLASSES FOR GRADES 1-2
Grades 1 and 2 will meet on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the school classrooms. As part of preparation for First Holy Communion, parents of 2nd grade children will need to attend 4 classes, which will meet during that same time.
CLASSES FOR 6TH-8TH GRADE
Middle school students will attend the EDGE Program for their catechesis, every other Sunday night from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Dinner is provided during this time. EDGE also serves as part of the 2-year Confirmation preparation for 7th and 8th graders.
- What makes EDGE different from a classroom faith formation model?
Edge is a youth ministry model, meaning that it is all about relationships. There are no textbooks; instead there is a teaching done by an EDGE core member or an engaging video. Middle school youth are in large group and small group settings where they are able to create relationships with their peers and small group leaders.
FAMILY FAITH FORMATION
Beginning this year, we will be offering A Family of Faith, a parent-led faith formation program from Sophia Institute. Studies show that parental involvement is by far the most important factor for ensuring that a child develops into a practicing Christian. Yet, too often we neglect parent formation and focus exclusively on the formation of the child. A Family of Faith offers an easy-to-use solution for catechizing the whole family and equipping them with the tools they need to lead their children to Heaven.
A Family of Faith follows a four-year cycle for grades 1-5. Parents are given a detailed picture of authentic and vibrant Catholic family life, the tools to implement this life in their home, age appropriate readings, games, crafts, and other activities to help them deepen among their children a love for Christ and His Church. After four years, families will have been guided through the entirety of the Catechism and will have developed a broad understanding of Christ’s teachings.
- How does it work?
On one Sunday each month, parents and children will gather for a family meeting in the parish center. At this meeting, an overview of the month’s teaching will be given, in an effort to help parents assume their role as the primary educators of their children.
The family meeting is from 9:00AM – 10:15AM and coffee and donuts will be served. Over the course of the month, parents will teach two lessons to their children at home with the easy-to-use Parent Guide and the student activity books. Throughout the year, we will offer family activities for the various liturgical seasons.
While this program is geared toward children in grades 1-5, it does not take the place of classes for 1st and 2nd graders.
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
We encourage families who have children with special needs to contact us so we can discuss resources and accommodations that are available.
We look forward to the new year of Religious Education in our parish community, and we hope you and your family will find this new approach interesting and spiritually beneficial. We welcome your questions and comments. Thank you for your partnership in sharing the Faith with your children.
